A part of our team is so severely disabled or isolated and unable to leave their families and so they are unable to travel into the workshop each day. These Quilters work from their villages in groups where they learn team work as they labor sometimes for months at a time to complete just one Quilt. Indeed, this resembles the traditional quilting methods of work in Europe and America where women sit together and quilt thus resisting isolation and learning from each other’s stories and life experiences.
At our Doi Can workshop in the heart of Hanoi our workers sit quietly, albeit animatedly, as the elder women and men pass on their skills to the younger ones. A form of ongoing training takes place naturally, giving more experienced women and men the chance to take on new and larger responsibilities within the group.
